SEO / SEO – Google doesn’t use Meta keywords

Clients ask me all the time to add "Meta Keywords" to their websites. Now, I seem to be saying the same thing over and over and that is, Google doesn't use the Keyword tags in it's ranking algorithm. Reason being, it's just been abused and spammed too much.

Hear it from Google iteself!

You can watch Google’s Matt Cutts explain below.

Now, if you’re wondering what Keywords are take a look at the below. Every website has source code and it can be viewed. By looking at the website you can see that they do use Keywords. As Matt explains above, they just don’t use them so my feeling is don’t waste your time and money on them.

What about other search engines?

Both Bing and Yahoo! have said that they don’t use them, however, they still recommend putting them in even though the pay off may be tiny, if any (basically what they’ve said is “where not giving you much info”). I believe you should leave them out and focus more on your content as that’s what is really important.

What about the Meta description?

This is important as it is often what is used for the snippet when viewing search results on Google.
